The city’s monuments, museal treasures, the special atmosphere of the old city’s streets, its cultural events make Esztergom a favored destination for travelers. Esztergom was a royal and religious center for over three centuries. This city was one of the most significant cities of the era of the House of Arpad with rich trading and craftsman families. Bálint Balassa the Europe wide famous figure of poetry lost his life in the siege of the castle of Esztergom in 1594. The basilica of Esztergom was built between 1822 and 1869. This is the largest church in Central Europe. It is really worth to get acquainted with the history and the present of the city during a visit to the area.
